CHAPTER EIGHT

“What does the sheriff want?” Alex leaned over and whispered to Billie. She responded with the shrug of her shoulders. Asher was in the office speaking with him at that very moment.

“I imagine he wants to ask us what we know about everything that’s been going on.” She felt her stomach churn as she said the words.

“Well, he needs to listen to me,” Alex said. “I wonder if he’s spoken to the chief yet?”

“You know, I think I’m going to give Cam a tour of the food truck when he is finished cleaning up,” Dillon suggested.

Billie smiled. “You absolutely should,” she said. “In fact, why don’t you run down to my office and grab the folder off of my desk with his contract in it. I trust you to go over things with him. The truck keys are on my desk as well. You could take him to the boardwalk and show him around. Introduce him to everyone.”

“Oh, I think I will go with you,” Alex said.

“No, Alex,” Billie said. “I think you are going to be needed here. You’re right. You do have something to say to the sheriff. I’m sure he’s already talked to the chief, but this is important.”

“Right.” Alex nodded his head. “I was just saying that myself, wasn’t I? It’s a symptom of entering your eighth decade.”

Billie smiled and nodded to Dillon. “You’re my head manager, Dillon,” she said. “If you don’t mind orienting your friend to the business, I’d really appreciate it. I’ll check in and sign the contract myself the second I’m free.”

Dillon nodded at her and beamed. “I am grateful for your confidence in me,” he said. He looked up at Cam who had just emerged from the test kitchen. “Come on, old pal. Let’s get things set up for you.” They walked together down the other side of the building toward Billie’s office.

Billie breathed a sigh of relief when they had gone. It was enough to worry about Frank and what he had to say about things, let alone scaring off the best hope she had for the burger truck at the same time.

“What do you think of Cam?” Alex asked her when the two men headed outside.

“I hope this mess with Julie, or whoever she was, doesn’t scare him off,” she said. “I want him in my fleet.”

“He knows his way around the kitchen,” Alex said.

“That he does,” Billie said. “But that isn’t the only reason why. He is an older man, and he has been through some loss. You can tell that.”

“Why does that make any difference to you?” Alex asked.

She searched his face. His question seemed sincere. “Because he has a reason to be here, and he knows how to handle himself behind the counter, I believe,” she said. “When I first started this business after my grandmother died, I had the idea that I would give anything to go back to my early twenties and start over. But I’ve since learned that not everyone older than twenty-two is ruined.
